Top 6 Companies Offering Meternity

Top 6 Companies Offering MeternityTop 6 Companies Offering MeternityTop 6 Companies Offering MeternityLooking for a respite from your long stressful hours at work? Or maybe you need to refresh after a particularly grueling deadline. Taking some me time may be the perfect solution. Taking time off from work elend only helps freshen your outlook, it actually increases your productivity and success rate. Yes, thats right letting go and taking a vacation makes you a better employee.Increasingly, companies are realizing that a rested worker is a good worker. Human resources develops benefit packages ranging from extended vacations to memberships at local relaxation spots. Google even built spas on its campus to promote relaxation. But theres a new benefit hitting the market meternity. No, were not talking about the required maternity leave mothers have after pregnancy. meternity gives employees the option to relax and take time off. TWEETWhat is meternity?Coined by Meghann Foye, author o f the popular novel Meternity, meternity leave is the necessary time off everyone deserves. Foye said she was tired of seeing colleagues take several months off because they were pregnant. She believes everyone should have the opportunity to take some mandatory leave.Women and men who choose not to have children never get the same opportunity. Their life has room for work and standard vacation no more, no less.Though Foye may be on to an excellent idea, some think the concept of a meternity leave is disrespectful and doesnt consider the actual reality of maternity leave. Mothers and fathers preparing for long-term caregiving roles say maternity is no bed of roses. Nights are filled with crying, burping, changing diapers, feeding and worrying about their newborn. The free time doesnt leave much room for reflecting or resting.Either way, whether you love the idea or recoil from the implications, meternity leave is making its mark on the modern world. Several national corporations h ave melded the philosophy into its benefit package. Here are six companies who offer some form of me time.Goldman Sachs.Goldman Sachs is known for its lucrative benefits. What many may not realize however, is that it has an extended meternity allowance. While not considered a typical sabbatical, Goldman Sachs Returnship program allows gruppe members to return to work after an extended absence of 24 to 52 weeks. The company instituted the program to help talented professionals restart their careers hence Returnship. The program includes a paid, ten-week training series. Training covers important information about the company, changes since the employee left and cross-departmental training to provide new opportunities. Genentech.Genentech provides employees with paid and unpaid sabbatical leave to help them focus on personal issues, pursue professional development or just unwind and refresh their minds. Genentechs founders believed in affording employees the opportunity to advance th eir careers through academic research. The program was originally designed to allow gruppe members time to research and train. Based in San Francisco, CA, the biotechnology firm is a subsidiary of world-famous Roche medical. Genentech provides up to six-weeks meternity. But theres a catch. Employees must put in six years at the company before they are eligible for this benefit. Meternity leave can be used with vacation time or separately. Genentech also is listed as one of Fortunesbest companies to work for in 2016.Hyland.If frequency is what youre looking for, Ohio-based software company Hyland is the way to go. If relaxing for two to four weeks every year isnt enough, Hyland offers a little me time in between. Employees are provided a four-week sabbatical in plus-rechnen to the standard two-week to one-month vacations. Employees who put in eight years are eligible to take four-weeks meternity every five years. Hyland started offering personal time in 2014. The company reports 210 employees have come back from their meternity leave feeling relaxed and ready to conquer the world. The Boston Consulting Group.Fortunes third best company to work for knows the importance of letting employees go. Go and leave that is. The Boston Consulting Group learned that providing extended sabbaticals in addition to standard leave and vacation provides team members the opportunity to advance their careers, bring new ideas to the company and become better leaders. To help accomplish this, The Boston Consulting Group provides eight weeks paid meternity to those who have been a partner with the firm for five years. Thats correct. While all team members get standard leave, only the top dogs are allotted me time. Though, the 20 days yearly vacation makes up for it.The Container Store.Who knew selling containers could be so stressful? The Container Store recognizes the extra work performed by veteran team members by offering them a chance to take classes, go on an extended vacation or do nothing. The home goods and storage container retailer provides full-time employees who have 10 years of experience with the company a chance to take a two weeks of paid sabbatical. The meternity leave comes in addition to their four-week vacation every year. While the company doesnt report any criteria other than seniority, most companies restrict sabbatical to once every five to ten years.Recreational Equipment Inc. (REI).One would think working for a recreational store would be relaxing enough. REI rolls out the red carpet and provides employees with even more relaxation. The camping goods retailer offers its team members four consecutive weeks. But theres a catch. Employees must put in 15 years with the company to be eligible. Unlike most companies who provide a meternity program, REI lets team members take another four weeks every five years. This me time is provided in addition to the standard four weeks vacation. Thats right. Veteran campers have the luxury of earning two months total leave every five years.Balancing me time with vacation leave.Four to eight weeks leave may seem like heaven to some workers. After tolling the months away working their poor bones bare, meternity is a blessing. Like all blessings, we must take me time in stride. Dont waste your time off on silly vacations, migraine headaches or family outings. This is special time, reserved for refreshing the soul and detoxing your system. Most employees never enjoy an extended time away from work. Use yours responsibly.Instead of squandering your meternity leave on trivial wonderings, first cash out your vacation and other paid leave. These are renewed every year and can help provide you with time off for important activities. For example, save your meternity for a relaxing, extended trip to Europe or take those refresher course for a promotion. Use vacation time for family reunions, graduations and summer playtime. Trust us when you squander me time on other endeavors, youll regret i t when you really need an energizer.Want to see how your resume stacks up? Try out our free critique today

5 fascinating books on how to break bad habits

5 fascinating books on how to break badeanstalt habits5 fascinating books on how to break bad habitsPsychological research shows people overestimate themselves in nearly every arena - including modesty. Which raises an interesting question Whats the one thing alfruchtwein everyone will cop to being utterly dismal at?Self-control.From Willpower Rediscovering the Greatest Human StrengthAsk people to name their greatest personal strengths, and theyll often credit themselves with honesty, kindness, humor, creativity, bravery, and other virtues - even modesty. But not self-control. It came in dead last among the virtues being studied by researchers who have surveyed more than one million people around the world. Of the two dozen character strengths listed in the researchers questionnaire, self-control welches the one that people were least likely to recognize in themselves. Conversely, when people were asked about their failings, a lack of self-control was at the top of the list.Ive po sted about breaking bad habits numerous times but somehow we have not all been miraculously cured of procrastination, overeating, and wasting time on the internet. (I gave it my best shot, mom, I swear.)As much as it pains me to say, sometimes a mere blog post just wont cut it. Sometimes we need to go deeper because curated tidbits arent a miracle cure to problems that have plagued yur happiness and productivity for years. Go figure. So we have to break out the big guns And actually read some books. Yes, they still make those. (Some silly people even spend years of their life writing them.)Well, I read them. A lot of them. And you can benefit from my excessive Kindle expenditures. So when it comes to breaking bad habits, which books are worth yur time? Are based on legit evidence? Actually help? And wont bore you to tears? You have come to the right corner of the internet, my friend Lets look at 5 books that will teach you how habits work, why yur brain wont do the right thing, how t o address these issues, and how to defeat the dark forces that are actively working against your best intentions.Okay, time to break things. Lets get to it 1. The Power Of HabitYouve probably heard of this one. And theres a very good reason for that. Its solid, thorough, and written by Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times reporter Charles Duhigg. He cites a Duke study showing a full 40% of your daily choices arent choices - theyre habits. Youre on autopilot for nearly half the day. So if your habits are bad, youre basically a robot programmed to run around screwing your life up.So you need to understand how bad habits work, how to snap out of the loop, and how to get yourself happily addicted to better habits. The primary secret Duhigg focuses on? Replacement. As you well know, habits are really hard to break. So dont. Keep the habit, but replace the troublesome part at the end where you do something not-so-good. And Duhigg clearly and enjoyably walks you through how to do that.If y ou read one book on habits, this is the one.Check it out here.Alright, learning the ins and outs of bad habits is great but when weve engaged in them long enough - and repeatedly tried and failed to overcome them - an understandable question arises What the hell is wrong with me?Heres an answer thats a lot cheaper than therapy 2. WillpowerHow does willpower work? And why dont we seem to have any?Dont worry youre not broken. Research shows we all spend a quarter of our day resisting desires and fail half the time. But with a deeper understanding of how willpower really works we can make simple changes in our lives that better align our actions with our hopes and dreams. An example? One study shows you can increase willpower with a mirror. Yup, a mirror. When we can see ourselves, we naturally compare who we are with who we should be. And that makes us act in ways more consistent with our values.Top researcher Roy Baumeister and acclaimed science writer John Tierney deliver a book ch ock full of eye-opening research and excellent insights that explains why we do what we do - and how we can do better.Check it out here. But some people will still be skeptical. Theyve lost the battle against willpower for decades and feel their bad habits would make Keith Richards blush.Theyll insist that they can only overcome their self-control issues with secrets culled from ancient tomes and fine tuned by bleeding edge neuroscience. So do you have anything like that to recommend, Mr. Fancy-Pants-Blogger-Man?Actually, I do 3. The Craving MindYou will not have to rely on teeth-gritting willpower. Nor will you have to replace your bad habits as Duhigg recommends. But you will need to learn about your brain and maybe even meditate.Judson Brewer, MD, PhD, explains a method that combines neuroscience research with mindfulness practices to devastate your naughty impulses. But does such a trendy-sounding method really work? In a controlled study, Brewers approach went head to head with the leading technique for helping people quit smoking. His system didnt just win - it was twice as effective in getting people to give up cigarettes. And learning mindfulness doesnt just help you ditch bad habits. It also has other tiny side effects like increasing happiness and making this godforsaken world tolerable.Check it out here.So far weve been hitting the bad habit bug with broad spectrum antibiotics. What about being more targeted toward some of the most common addictions were all dealing with these days?4. Irresistible46% of study subjects said theyd rather suffer a broken bone than a broken phone. 70% of office emails are checked within six seconds of arrival. Our robot overlords have already arrived, were warmly welcomed, and are now safely ensconced in our pockets. And out-and-out quitting this bad habit isnt an option. We need to manage it because our work and personal lives demand we stay connected. But NYU professor Adam Alter leverages the research to show us how to find harmony with our devices and take back control.Check it out here. Now beating technological habits can be particularly difficult because were not merely fighting our impulses. Theres an active enemy in this war. Many companies are deliberately trying to make their services more addictive. How do you overcome an opponent who is working hard to thwart your noble efforts?By reading their playbook, of course 5. HookedNo, this is not a digital Necronomicon that uses the dark arts to ensnare the minds of your children. Its a finely crafted book that answers the question What is it that makes Facebook and Instagram so addictive?Nir Eyal, who teaches courses on applied consumer psychology at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, explains what makes products and apps so sticky. (And Nir is not evil, by the way. In fact, hes one of the nicest people Ive ever met.)By learning what it is that hooks you, you can better understand what you need to do to break free.Check it out here.Alrigh t, weve learned a lot. Lets round it up and find out about a book that can help us decide what we should be doing once weve freed up that time previously spent on bad habitsSum upHere are 5 fascinating books on how to break bad habitsThe Power of Habit How bad habits work and how to replace them so you can get to work.Willpower How to potty train your brain so you stop pooping all over your goals. The Craving Mind No, its not The Craven Mind. Thats my forthcoming autobiography. This one beats bad habits with the Iron Man/Doctor Strange team-up of science and mindfulness.Irresistible The best way to stop checking your phone (that doesnt involve throwing it in a river.)Hooked Know thy enemy. Learn the dark arts being used against you to better resist their Cthulhu magic.Georgetown professor and productivity guru Cal Newport says that clearing the decks of your unproductive habits isnt enough. Stopping the bad doesnt magically make you start doing the good - if you even know what the g ood is.Nature abhors a vacuum (and so do most house cats.) So whats a book that can show you what we should be doing in order to achieve our goals?Yeah, I wrote it. But dont let that talk you out of giving it a read Often when we have more time we just waste it - or spend it in less-than-optimal ways. I went through gobs and gobs of research to dispel the myths about success and get the real answers to what we need to be doing to get where we wanna go in our careers and personal lives.Check it out here.Habits deserve the deep dive we can only get from reading full books. As that study showed, 40% of your choices arent choices theyre habits. So nearly half the time, your habits make your choices for you.And thats why getting rid of bad habits and starting good ones is so critical. As the old saying goesWe all make choices. Notice how it begins with a professional summary that catches the eye with some of the jobseekers best professional qualities. She draws attention to soft skills such as responsible and dedicated and specific hard skills such as coordinating large projects and conflict resolution. Equally as important, she keeps readers attention by using only three concise sentences to effectively communicate her message. Look at the core qualifications section next. The applicant structures this section with bullet points and short phrases, leaving details for other sections. This allows hiring managers to skim through the se ction quickly while still learning the most important skillsets the candidate possesses. The applicant includes a variety of skills, each one relevant and pertinent to a position as an operations coordinator, to show that she is capable of handling all aspects of such a job. While it may be tempting to list every possible skill in this section, it is best to keep the list under eight bullet points, as exemplified in the sample. The sample resume continues to be easily readable with a work experience section that uses bullet points to draw attention to each job responsibility. The jobseeker details her most recent work first and keeps the section limited to the past 20 years of her career. She uses action verbs to begin each bullet point, which makes her sound like a confident candidate and makes each duty sound more impressive. She also avoids repeating herself and shows a great range of responsibilities to further stand out.The operations coordinator resume sample ends with a succin ct education section. This section does not need to be too long or go into too much detail. The jobseeker gets right to the point by clearly stating the title, year, school, and location of her education. Why You Need a Strong Operations Coordinator ResumeEmployment within this particular field is expected to grow at an average rate of about 5 to 8 percent through 2024. That being said, employers place a lot of importance on the smooth operations of their businesses and want to be sure whoever they hire can handle the daily responsibilities and demands. Hiring managers typically scan a resume for about five to seven seconds before deciding if they should read it thoroughly or move on, according to several studies. That means that every single word in your document counts. Using our guidelines and operations coordinator resume sample, you can construct a resume that makes the most of those few seconds with engaging language and impressive skills and accomplishments.Costly Operations C oordinator Resume Mistakes To AvoidYou probably already know to avoid common resume-writing mistakes such as spelling errors, excessive word repetition, and incorrect contact information. However, there are a few mistakes you should specifically avoid as an operations coordinator. There are many aspects of business operations, and as an operations coordinator, you may face a great variety of responsibilities. Avoid the mistake of trying to encompass every single aspect with a phrase that is too general or vague. Note how the jobseeker in the operations coordinator resume sample refrains from claiming operations management as a skill and instead identifies key areas of operations with skills such as project management, resource allocation, and conflict resolution in her qualifications section.Another temptation you may face as you create your own resume is to exaggerate the skills you possess. Do not claim to have skills that you dont actually have, as chances are the hiring manager w ill ask about these skills during an interview. Simply omit such skills and emphasize the ones you do have.ConclusionResume writing may seem tricky and confusing, but working with an operations coordinator resume sample, like the one shown here, makes the entire process easier than ever. Refer to it for ideas and follow our writing guidelines to create a document that shows off your best professional qualities and accomplishments and increases your chances of landing interviews.

What a Good Learning Mentor Resume Should Look Like

What a Good Learning Mentor Resume Should Look LikeWhat a Good Learning Mentor Resume Should Look LikeWhat a Good Learning Mentor Resume Should Look LikeWorking with children of any age is a job that requires a lot of personal investment. Its never easy and you need to be careful about developing your methods as a learning mentor. You also need to have a strong desire to constantly improve and develop them according to the needs of each new generation. That being said, we can come to a simple conclusion this job isnt for everyone. Working with adults and dealing with clients or customers is often overwhelming, but working with children is about a hundred times more difficult. Being a learning mentor is a job that will follow you home.Taking up this job comes with a lot of responsibilities, some of which are in the job description while others are implied. Obviously, you shouldnt devote your career to developing kids minds if you cant handle the responsibility it will show in your re sume and through your behavior. So, if you have successfully passed this first obstacle, youre ready to begin with your resume. It Needs to Be Tailored to Your Job DescriptionMost people make that one saatkorn mistake and send out the same resume for different jobs. This is probably the main reason why you dont get invited to the second round of interviews. When youre sending out your resume for a pspeciesicular job, you should adapt it to fit the requirements of that job.Being a learning mentor is practically being a medium between students and teachers. Obviously, the main focus of your job are the students, but its quite important to establish a clear communication with the teaching staff as well. With this in mind, youll be able to sort out what information and relevant experience should be included in your resume. Each previous job, a skill or a characteristic of yours need to be strongly connected to a learning mentor job description and the resume needs to emphasize why you are a great candidate for this position. All Sections Should Be Neat and TransparentAs a person that will be responsible for encouraging others and helping them improve their performance, you need to establish that you are a serious professional right from the beginning. If you want the interviewer to perceive you as a capable and reliable candidate, you need to put your organizational skills at the forefront. So, it starts with your resume it mustnt have any clutter whatsoever. If you want to be seen as someone who can help others establish discipline, you need to show it yourself. This is a thing that many neglect, but it can determine whether youll get that job you want or not. No matter what form of resume you plan on using the classic one, an infographic or a physical version of your portfolio make sure that its visually formatted in such a way that it makes your best qualities apparent even at a quick glance.Keep Your Lines Clear and Concise, but Cover EverythingEverything I previ ously mentioned is important for creating a good learning mentor resume, but content is what matters the most. Quality resume writing is an art you need to establish a balance between being clear, but using the right words, and being short, but still managing to share everything you feel that your interviewer should know about you.Obviously, this will take time. My suggestion is to write a comprehensive resume that covers absolutely everything you ever did and lists all your skills and characteristics if you havent already. This is a useful little thing because it will be useful for this and any other jobs that you might apply for in the future. When youre done with that, you should take a good long look at a particular learning mentor job description and compare these two texts you see in front of you. Then, start shaping your resume based on the requirements laid out in the job description. This way, you can be positive that you havent forgotten anything and youll be completely t horough.Make Sure You Find Appropriate ReferencesNot all job positions will require you to have previous experience in this area, but you should include it in your resume anyway. If you have none of it whatsoever, you should write down any experience you had that prepared you for the types of challenges you will encounter working as a learning mentor. For example, even if you havent officially worked in an educational institution, you might have helped someone with their homework at some point in your past, tutored a younger student or babysit your younger sibling or a neighbors kid.Any children related experience will be more than welcomed, you can be sure of that. Their young minds require special treatment and a lot of devotion, both of which should come natural to every learning mentor. You Should Definitely Include a Cover LetterThis is the part of your resume where you can add a personal touch. I believe that this should be as carefully written as your resume, because if writt en well it can allow you to really stand out from the crowd.A great cover letter explains why a certain job would fulfill you and how you can contribute. Naturally, you should also add what you expect from the job and what that specific educational institution can expect from you.The perfect tone for this letter is somewhere between personal and professional. You should tend to stick to the official form and language, but still make it special in your own way.I have one last piece of advice for you you can be absolutely positive that every form of additional effort you invest into your resume will be noted and appreciated by your interviewer, which is why I believe you need to take your time with it.All in all, being a learning mentor is a fulfilling job and its a job you should be lucky to have. Helping others deal with their problems in any way is a noble cause, and it should be treated as one.

Dont Follow Everybody Elses Career Advice - The Muse

Dont Follow Everybody Elses Career Advice - The MuseDont Follow Everybody Elses Career AdviceJust a couple of years ago, I was attempting to decide between staying in my safe, predictable, and somewhat monotonous full-time job or hitting the road in favor of pursuing a career as a freelance writer. Ive talked about that experience numerous times before. But, to summarize It wasnt an easy choice for me. As a matter of fact, it was something that I went back and forth on for months before finally gathering my courage and putting in my two weeks notice. If youre anything like me, when youre weighing the pros and cons between two vastly different choices, you feel the overwhelming urge to talk everything to death. Im one of those people who needs to verbalize my thoughts in order to adequately process them- which, as Im sure you can imagine, meant I talked literally everybodys ear off about my big, looming career decision. It didnt matter if you were one of my nearest and dearest friends or my cashier at Target. You were going to hear about the earth-shattering and life-altering leap I was debating making. What did this result in (aside from a lot of confused stares from unsuspecting cashiers)? Well, a lot of advice and judgments. And, to be honest, a lot of it wasnt great.I dont know if I could work from home all day. Id go crazy said one of my college friends who was so structured she had her morning routine timed down to the minute. Ugh, just the thought of not having a steady paycheck and a predictable workload is enough to make me nauseous, said another. Of course, their concerns made perfect sense. But, this struck me as odd The parts that they pointed out as the most cringe-worthy were actually two of the pieces I was looking forward to the most. Constantly chasing new projects and opportunities, all while wearing my pajamas? It was a dream for me, but apparently a nightmare for them. Yes, sharing my potential plans with all sorts of different people taught me something important (aside from the fact that people are typically much more willing to offer criticism than compliments) Absolutely everybody has a completely different idea of what makes an awesome career. And, as a result, you need to take everybody elses advice with a serious grain of salt. We all get so wrapped up in the things we want, that it becomes almost impossible to imagine that anybody else could possibly ever want anything different. But, it happens- particularly when it comes to careers. Were all unique. For example, my husband heads into his office job day in and day out in order to stare at spreadsheets and run a bunch of complicated equations. To me? Well, that sounds like my own personalized slice of hell. But, to him? Its his dream job- and I mean that completely seriously. He loves it.Thats right- theres no one-size-fits-all perfect career. And, as to be expected, we all let our own hopes, desires, dreams, and opinions color the advice and guidance that we give to others. Maybe someones telling you that you shouldnt chase that promotion, because itll only mean working longer hours- and who wants that? Perhaps a loved one is encouraging you to look for jobs closer to home, because theres no way she could imagine moving that far away. Or, maybe a well-meaning cashier is giving you a judgmental look that says, Hey, crazy lady. You really shouldnt take the security of your full-time gig for granted.Whatever advice youre on the receiving end of, its important to remember this Those people undoubtedly have pure intentions when sharing their recommendations, but their guidance is always going to come tinged with just a little bit of personal bias. Theyre seeing your life and your career through their lens. And, you? Well, you might have a totally different pair of glasses. You cant judge your own career solely based on somebody elses ideals. So, while its definitely advisable to listen to- and even seriously consider- other peoples thoughts and opinions, dont let those be the deciding factor when youre making choices for yourself. In the end, everybody has varying career goals and completely different dream jobs. And- when it comes to finding yours- youre the only one who will truly know whats best. This trait is the key to a lasting romance according to experts

This trait is the key to a lasting romance according to expertsThis trait is the key to a lasting romance according to expertsPassion and commitment are widely believed to be the foundation of strong romantic relationships. But a relationship is made of two unique individuals, and personality traits these individuals possess or lack can often make a relationship more likely to endure. In a recent study, we found that one trait in particular humility is an important indicator of successful relationships.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreAn honest view of shortcomingsHumility can sometimes be confused with low self-esteem, low confidence or meekness. But researczu sichs have come to realize that being humble generally indicates the presence of deeply admirable personal qualities. It means you have the ability to accurately assess your deficiencies without denying your skills and stre ngths. For example, you might recognize that youre smart but realize it would be absurd to call yourself all-knowing especially when the scope of human knowledge is so vast. This is an honest and sober view of your shortcomings. As the philosopher Jason Baehr has argued, To be humble is to be attentive to and disposed to own ones limitations, weaknesses, and mistakes. A humble person does not ignore, avoid, or try to deny her limits or deficiencies. If youre humble, you lack a host of negative qualities, such as arrogance and overconfidence. It means you can acknowledge mistakes, see value in things that are riddled with imperfections and identify areas for improvement. The link between humility and forgivenessHumility appears to be a huge asset to relationships. One study found that people tend to rate this quality highly in their significant other. It also found that someone who is humble is more likely to initiate a romantic relationship, perhaps because theyre less likely to see th emselves as too good for someone else. But in our study, we wanted to explore the link between humility and forgiveness in couples.Humility is tricky to measure we worried that people who were hoffrtig might presumptuously declare their humility, while people who were actually humble would, as a sign of their humility, downplay this trait. So we approached this question by asking each partner in a romantic relationship about their own and their partners humility. We hoped that even if a truly humble person didnt consider themselves humble, at least their partner would recognize this trait. We asked 284 couples from the Detroit metropolitan area questions about how humble they were, how humble they thought their partner was and if they were likely to forgive their partner if they did something that was hurtful, like insulting them.We found that people who felt their partner or spouse was humble were more likely to forgive them following a hurtful situation. This wasnt true, however, of those who felt their partner or spouse was arrogant. Many of our respondents with arrogant partners indicated that because their partners were less likely to admit to any personal failings, they were less likely forgive them.Interestingly, the strength of an individuals social network can play a role too. If someone has a humble partner, theyre more likely to forgive that person. If someone has a lot of close, supportive friends and a humble partner, theyll be even more likely to forgive that partner after he or she has screwed up. But if your partner is arrogant, it doesnt matter how many great friends the couple has, theyll still be less likely to be forgiven. The ability to forgive is so important because pain is an inevitable part of any relationship. People mess up. They might say something they dont mean, be unknowingly inconsiderate or forget an important event. So when looking for a partner, its probably a good idea to find someone who recognizes that making mistakes is part of being human.Toni Antonucci, Elizabeth M. 6 Avoidable Job Search Mistakes That Scream, Im Unprofessional!

6 Avoidable Job Search Mistakes That Scream, “I’m Unprofessional!” 6 Avoidable Job Search Mistakes That Scream, “I’m Unprofessional!” 6 Avoidable Job Search Mistakes That Scream, “I’m Unprofessional!” If your goal is to come across as polished and professional, you'll want to avoid these job search mistakes. [TWEET] You've waded through the internet job boards. A few listings look like they could be just right. Now, it's up to you to impress the hiring manager and get that interview. Your resume can do the initial heavy lifting, but every contact you have with a prospective employer affects the way you're seen as a candidate. Avoid these 6 simple mistakes when looking for a job that scream I'm unprofessional! as you continue your search. 1. Your vanity email There's nothing wrong with expressing yourself through a fun, whimsical email address. Yankeefan#1@aol.com or SweetSassy@hotmail.com may be how your friends know you, but that doesn't make them appropriate for professional correspondence. A good rule of thumb is to use your name, first and last. If you have a very common name, you can adjust it by adding a number or a professional tag such as AdamJonesCPA@gmail.com. You also want to show that you're keeping up with the times by ditching old email providers like Hotmail or Lycos. There are plenty of great email providers to choose from and Gmail is the gold standard today. If you still like your Hotmail account, just switch it to Outlook to show that you, too, can change with the times when looking for jobs. 2. Your use of fun fonts Most resumes look so boring, right? Yep. And that's okay. You heard the same thing from your Freshman Composition teacher, Use a basic font, 12pt. Always. Why so boring? How will your resume stand out? Comic Sans or other goofy fonts don't show your creativity to employers, they show that you don't know the rules of the game. Your accomplishments on your resume should do the talking, not the font. If you're not confident that you know the best way to format your resume and avoid job search mistakes, hire a reputable resume service to do it for you. 3. Your voicemail message Your cover letter and resume got an employer's attention. Congratulations! But, if they give you a call and end up getting your voicemail and it sounds like this, Hey there, it's Dougie, I can't come to the phone right now because I'm out killin' this town's tequila supply! They are not likely to leave a message or call back. Ever. Again, it may sound boring, but you want your message to be simple and to the point, especialy when looking for jobs. Hi, you've reached Doug. I can't answer your call right now, but leave your name and number and I'll get back to you just as soon as I can. 4. Your interview attire I'd like to take this one a step further. It's not just about dressing professionally for your interview. Carefully consider what you wear any time you'll have contact with an employer. Even if you are just picking up an application or dropping one off, you'll leave an impression. If that impression involves jeans with holes in them, a backwards ball cap, or a skirt that leaves nothing to the imagination, they won't need to look at your application to make a decision. When it comes to the interview itself, consider what attire is appropriate for the position you're gunning for and then step it up one level. It's always better to err on the side of classy to avoid job search mistakes. 5. You get too personal at the interview You want your potential employer to get a feel for you as a person, not just a resume, right? Yes, to a point. It's okay, even beneficial, to list charitable passions or hobbies that are relevant to the job, but it can also be easy to say the wrong thing at an interview. They don't need to hear about your love life, medical details, or affinity for cat videos. Aim for keeping the conversation personable, not personal. 6. You don't do your homework Interviewers expect you to come into an interview with knowledge of their company. Why would you apply if you don't know anything about them? Go to their website and find some interesting tidbits that are most relevant to your area of expertise and work them into conversation. Have a couple of questions ready, too, because they will ask if you have questions. Remember this piece of advice when looking for jobs: if you come to the interview acting like they're just another company they'll treat you like just another applicant. At the end of the day, these aren't meant to take your personality out of your job hunt, you'll have plenty of ways to let your personality shine while also showing that you understand the basic rules of the process. When you show that you are not only a qualified candidate, but a professional individual, you'll separate yourself from the rest of the pack. Hire a TopResume writer to help you land more interviews, faster.

Heres how to win at flu season and avoid getting sick

Here's how to win at flu season and avoid getting sick Here's how to win at flu season and avoid getting sick As fall approaches, so do the runny noses and colds this new season gifts us with each year. And when you work in an open office where germs can fly freely from your coughing neighbors, a sickness is just a sneeze away. Colds don’t only make you feel crummy, they also hurt workers and companies’ productivity in the long-run. The Healthy Workplace Project found that  adult influenza infections result in an average of up to five lost working days a year. But there are preventative measures employees and companies can take to beat the odds of flu season at your office. Here’s how you can win at flu season and emerge in the springtime, glowing and sickness-free.Get that flu shotMany offices increasingly offer flu vaccine shots as a wellness resource for the common good. Take advantage of the opportunity if your office offers it, or seek it from your local health provider. It not only helps you avoid colds, but the more people in your office get vaccinated, the more it helps the enti re office by building up “herd immunity,” according to immunologists.“Herd immunity is the idea that if I’m the one cow who can’t get vaccinated surrounded by all the other cows who did, then they can’t give me anything,” Ohio public health officer Cindy Modie told Cleveland.com.Disinfect everythingI’m guilty of pressing my fingers to my mouth when I’m thinking. But every time you touch your eyes and mouth with your grubby hands, you increase your chance of catching the flu. The first part of flu prevention is realizing that germs lurk everywhere: from your hands to your keyboard. It only takes one sick colleague to take down the herd. The Healthy Workplace Project found that it only took one participant’s sick hands four hours to contaminate more than half of all communal doorknobs, toilet handles, and light switches and commonly-contacted surfaces like personal telephones, computer mice, and desk chair armrests in an office. To be spared from the office plague, y our best shot is to disinfect surfaces regularly and rigorously. The Healthy Workplace Project researchers found that they could significantly reduce the spread of contamination by providing hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes, facial tissues, and simple instructions to office employees about good office hygiene. While the verdict is still out on whether hand sanitizers are the best way to go, a good wipe down with soap and water or other safe cleaning agents is a good bet.Wash your handsRegularly washing your hands is one of the most effective ways to stop the spread of germs and follow good office hygiene. But according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there’s a right way and a wrong way to do it. Scrubbing your hands for less than ten seconds is not enough time for your hands to get clean. The CDC says that you should wash your hands for at least 20 seconds, or the length of humming the “Happy Birthday” song twice. So get humming.Take a sick dayIf all else f ails and you wake up one morning with a stuffy nose and scratchy throat, please don’t be a work martyr and come to the office. Save yourself and your colleagues’ health by taking a sick day. The Canada Life Group Insurance  research  found that too many of us worry about appearing “lazy,” “not dedicated,” or “weak” for not showing up to work when sick. Millennials, in particular, are guilty of showing up to work when sick. A CityMD survey found that they were the demographic most likely to go outside and infect others when they were sick. According to the report, “Millennials (ages 18-34) who have had the flu or flu-like symptoms were much more likely than those 35 and older to have ventured out the last time they felt sick (76 percent vs. 56 percent).”But by coming into the office, you’re only hurting your colleagues and prolonging your suffering. Nearly half of U.K. employees in theThe Canada Life Group Insurance reported getting sick more than once because o f exposure to an ill coworker.Good office hygiene can ward away most common colds and flus from reaching you. But even the cleanest among us are not immune from falling ill. If it happens to you, don’t take your contaminated body to work - stay in bed.

Walking at this speed is linked to an earlier death

Walking at this speed is linked to an earlier death Walking at this speed is linked to an earlier death Irrespective of obesity status, or even body weight, individuals that walk fast live longer than their slower paced companions. This finding comes from a new paper published in  the Mayo Clinic Journal of Mayo Clinic, titled,  Comparative Relevance of Physical Fitness  and Adiposity on Life Expectancy.  The authors report, “participants reporting brisk walking pace had longer life expectancies across all levels of BMIs, ranging from 86.7 to 87.8 years in women and 85.2 to 86.8 years in men. Conversely, subjects reporting slow walking pace had shorter life expectancies, being the lowest observed in slow walkers with a BMI less than 20 kg/m2 (women: 72.4 years; men: 64.8 years).”Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!MethodologyThe researchers began with a study sample of data from 474, 919 participants, recorded between March 13, 2006, and January 31, 2016. In addition to surv eying  the  participants’ walking pace, the researchers also examined their body mass index, their waist circumference, and their body fat percentage. The study defined a “brisk walk” as a pace that hits speeds of 3 mph, or 100 steps per minute. “Slow walkers” referred to individuals that hit speeds, between 1 to 2 mph, or 50 steps per minute.  Across different levels and indices of adiposity, the first group, or the “brisk walkers” evidenced a longer life expectancy. The fact the results remained unchanged regardless of body weight index means physical fitness might be a better tell for life expectancy than BMI. Adding to this revelation, the researchers observed underweight  slow workers to express the lowest life expectancy of all the individuals  examined.“This is in contrast to assumption that is often made that obesity confers the most risk,” Professor Tom Yates, the study’s lead author, commented to  Newsweek.Mayo Clinic Proceedings  Just last year, Yates and his team of researchers uncovered similar findings in a much more specific study group. This particular report showed that middle age men that walked slowly, increased their risk for heart-related illnesses. The findings from both this year and last year’s study, join many others published in recent years, that accentuate the importance of habitual activity. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Survey Employees want raises more than they want promotions

Survey Employees want raises more than they want promotions Survey Employees want raises more than they want promotions Recent research from people analytics and employee engagement software company Peakon found that when UK workers were asked to choose what they want for Christmas from office-related features, 34% chose a raise, 28% chose a bonus, and only 8% wanted a promotion. The research team surveyed 3,000 employees in the UK.Here’s how other perks stacked upMoney and scaling the corporate ladder aren’t the only things on employees’ minds at the end of the year.Peakon’s research also found that 15% of UK workers want more yearly leisure time, 8% want a cat or dog in the office, and 4% want a “new line manager.”Just 3% said they would choose a “better office” as a gift. Here’s how to treat your employees this holiday seasonHere are some other things companies can do to make their employees feel valued.Make the company’s values clearResearch has found that many high-performing employees in the US and Canada work at places that make the company’s values and goals clear. So instea d of leaving your employees in the dark, and only communicating the company’s mission to senior leaders and executives on the board, be sure to keep everyone in the loop. It’s a lot easier to push your company’s agenda forward - and figure out how to contribute - when you know what it seeks to accomplish.Be lenient about workers’ hoursLetting employees occasionally work remotely during the holidays could help curb corporate burnout. Giving them time away from the office could help spark their productivity and creativity, and provide a refreshing reminder of how much they have going for them outside of the office.Make it clear that their work is paying offMonster contributing writer Catherine Conlan features advice from organizational consultant Orin C. Davis on the site.“Highlighting how an employee has made a contribution, not only to the company, but also to the greater good, is one of the most important things a company can do, Davis says. The business of me How to create your personal brand strategy

The business of me How to create your personal brand strategy The business of me How to create your personal brand strategy Liz Whiting  was done with her desk job. After graduating from the University of Maryland, she landed her first “real” job in the marketing department of a travel agency  but kept up the freelance marketing and content creation she had done since her sophomore year of college.“I just wasn’t happy,” says Liz Whiting, explaining why she quit her day job and made her side-hustle her main focus. “I was seeing that a lot of content creation wasn’t there. I was seeing that teams weren’t working constructively together and that there was a real knowledge gap between content creation, content marketing, and digital marketing.”After deciding that she would create her own marketing agency, Whiting launched  Fanfare Creative,  a content creation and social media management agency, in 2016.“I was freelancing for a while, and it eventually got to the point where I had to decide to take the leap and dive all in or keep doing my side-hustle while maintaining my day job. But jugg ling the two was becoming impossible. I had to do it.”By this time, Whiting had created social content for a host of small businesses and grew her Instagram following to influencer status. Today, Whiting boasts a social following of over 12,000 and credits it to applying the same brand building strategies to her personal profiles as she does for her clients. If you’re looking to build your brand, here are her best tips for establishing and growing your personal brand.Write your own brand bibleFor Whiting, one of the most crucial parts of getting started was writing her own personal brand bible (or brand manual). Before you can start  promoting  your brand, it is essential to know yourself.“Sit down and write a business plan for yourself. Write a brand story that will be used like a brand manual on you. I did it, and it really helped,” says Whiting. What exactly is in a brand manual?  Whiting,  also known as “Bizzy” to friends and family, says to use buzzwords or keywords you want associated with your brand. Write down your personal goals, use imagery that inspires you, and add a brief narrative about yourself.“It doesn’t have to be a novel, but write a little blurb about yourself. If you were to have a CEO bio right now, what would it say?”From there, you can start putting it all into action. Lockdown a brand name, a mission statement, and an “about me” section. Then, you can start building your content and get into a routine of posting. But it all starts with that brand manual.“After I wrote my brand manual was when I really started to build out my blog and frame my Instagram posts in a certain way- because I wanted people to see me and my life in a certain way.”Own your nicheThe biggest trap that people fall into when creating a blog or an online brand? Doing something that’s already been done.“There are thousands of people trying to do fashion. There are thousands of people trying to do a food blog,” explains Whiting. “Theyâ €™re all great accounts, but what’s the pull? What makes you different?”Finding the peculiarities in your brand is one of the best ways to get people interested and make sure you stand out, according to Whiting.“What are you doing that’s really unique? Do you work for the government and then make your own hemp lotion on the side? Are you a DC foodie who’s also vegan?”Knowing your niche will also help you know your audience. Understanding who you are trying to reach- and the best way to reach them- is essential to establishing a successful brand.Find the right platformOnce you understand your niche and your audience, you may have to evaluate what platform is best for you.“You really have to find a platform that’s also going to be right for your brand and your story,” says Whiting. “Sometimes Instagram or Twitter or Facebook, or any other platform for that matter, might not be right for you.”“So you have to say to yourself, okay, am I going to  blog? Am I going to blog consistently? Am I going to maintain a calendar? How am I going to tell my story and where am I going to tell it best?”Finding the right platform was crucial for Whiting, who now maintains her own blog,  Bizzy Life, in addition to running Fanfare Creative full time. The most important thing to remember when building your brand? “Every brand is on a brand journey - it’s constantly a process of discovery.”Liz is prepping for a move to the West Coast and is currently working on materials for a new project.  Follow her progress.  This article first appeared on Capitol Standard.

3 Tips to Help You Re-Enter the Workforce After an Extended Leave of Absence

3 Tips to Help You Re-Enter the Workforce After an Extended Leave of Absence 3 Tips to Help You Re-Enter the Workforce After an Extended Leave of Absence Anyone who has taken an extended period of time off from work for any reason understands just how terrifying it is to jump back into the  professional world. Taking time away from your role also means taking a break from developing your skills. As a result, it can be easy to lose confidence in yourself. Given that  54 percent of employees surveyed by Pew Research Center  said training and skills development  were essential throughout their work lives, its no wonder we put so much pressure on ourselves when returning to work after an extended absence. The good news is youre not doomed to an unsuccessful career. Here are a few tips to help you rise up and return to the workforce successfully: 1. Rediscover Your Passions Whether youve taken time off for three months or three years, your passions have likely changed. This could necessitate a drastic career change, or just a new focus in the same field. Before making a choice either way, you should reflect on who you were, who you are now, and who you want to become. Start by asking yourself these questions: - What activities did I enjoy doing? - What did I miss about my job while away? - Did I feel relieved about not going to work? If so, why? - Did I read anything that sparked my interest? Use the answers to these questions to evaluate your passions and  determine whether a major career change is in order. Search for jobs with descriptions and  organizations with missions that align with your values and inspirations. Let what you missed about your job - and what you dreaded  about it -  guide your job search. These factors will help narrow down your options and give you a bit of confidence in moving forward. 2. Regain Your Confidence The job search is hard enough under normal circumstances; trying to rejoin the workforce after a long time away makes it all the more daunting. This is especially true when youre competing against new grads and job seekers with advanced experience. It doesnt help that we put a lot of pressure on ourselves. In the Pew survey cited earlier, 72 percent of respondents said a lot of responsibility falls on individuals to make sure they have the right skills and education to be successful in todays economy. Remember: You were hired once before because of  the skills and qualifications you have, and you will be hired again. Dont lose sight of your previous achievements. Think back to each time you hit a goal, accomplished a difficult project, or were acknowledged for your hard work. Because insecurity feeds off stress, its important to talk about your  accomplishments out loud.  Sit down with a friend or former coworker to chat it out. Have your peer shut down any insecurities along the way. Most importantly, let them help you shift your focus  to your qualifications and positive attributes. 3. Dive Back In The next job offer you consider accepting will feel like a big step. After being out of the game for a while, its natural to  believe everything needs to be perfect when you make your next move. Sometimes, though, you have to just dive into the water. You can only rediscover so much of yourself outside of the workforce. Getting back into a job - even if its not your long-term career choice - will help build your confidence. It may even lead to some new skills as well. Once your feet are wet, revisit your list of passions. Note what you like about this new job, what you dread doing, and any new passions youve discovered. This will help you decide if youre on the right track, or if this job is just a stop along the way to rediscovering yourself. 4 Reasons Your Employee Referral Scheme is Failing

4 Reasons Your Employee Referral Scheme is Failing 4 Reasons Your Employee Referral Scheme is Failing Its no surprise that many of you may be clambering on the employer referrals bandwagon, but you may then be surprised to find that even though you have set up your employee referrals scheme, it simply isnt working. How can this be the case? Well, below, I have detailed four of the most likely reasons that your employee referral scheme may not be working: 1. Your employees are disengaged Have you checked your employee engagement levels lately? A survey by Gallup suggests that 71 percent of American Works are “not engaged” or are “actively disengaged” â€" and the problem with disengaged workers is that they generally dont say good things about their employer, are not willing to put in any discretionary effort, and are not willing to actively promote your business. This all adds up to a distinct lack of motivation to refer employees, which means an employee referral scheme has little chance of success in a disengaged environment. So, check out your own engagement levels and if they are low, this may be the source of your employee referral apathy and a problem that needs to be addressed before word-of-mouth hiring will work for you. 2. Bad employer reputation â€" negative word of mouth Have you checked your employer reputation? Just like any area of recruitment, word-of-mouth hiring will be impacted by your employer brand. Candidates will be less likely to apply to organizations with a weak employer brand and employees may be less inclined to refer if they find they have to constantly defend the reputation of the business. You should not underestimate the dampening effects that a bad reputation can have on word-of-mouth hiring as a TARP survey showed that while people who have a good experience with a company share this with just a few friends, those who have a bad experience share this with approximately 85 friends. There is likely to be a strong correlation between negative word of mouth and reduced referrals. So, whats your employer brand image like? If its bad it could be hindering your employee referrals scheme. 3. Employee referral scheme motivators are defective It could simply  be that your employee referral scheme is broken in some mechanistic way, meaning that the schemes behavior drivers are failing to motivate staff to put in effort or to refer. It could be that the incentives are too low, the scheme is unclear and has not been communicated, there is no reward for effort (just success), etc. There are many potential mechanistic scheme issues that could be mean your referral scheme is a turnoff to even engaged staff; so, make trial changes to the mechanics of the scheme and observe what drives referrals activity and what detracts from it. 4. Staff members are poor networkers You may need to entertain the prospect that your staff members are poor networkers. Sure if you have a large sales and marketing contingent and/or a high proportion of extroverted outgoing staff members who have large networks (and regularly network with industry peers) your employees will be presented with plenty of potential referral situations. However, less outgoing staff with smaller networks and who dont network will have fewer opportunities to actually refer staff â€" and this could be another reason for low levels of employee referrals in a department or your company. If you find that your employees are not great networkers you may need to provide much more coaching on networking and provide them with plenty of technical and marketing based props and aids to make it very easy for them to network and refer.

Pay for Unused Sick or Vacation Leave If Youre Fired

Pay for Unused Sick or Vacation Leave If You're Fired Pay for Unused Sick or Vacation Leave If You're Fired What happens to your unused  vacation time  or sick time when youre fired from your job? Will you be paid for the leave time you have accrued or will  you  not get anything if you’re  terminated for  a  cause? The answers depend on where you work and company policy. Some states have laws which require employers to pay for unused sick or vacation time when an employee is terminated. States That Require Payment for Unused Vacation There is no federal law governing if and when accrued vacation must be paid when an employee leaves his or her job. However, most states require payment of unused leave under certain circumstances. The map below breaks down states that require payment for unused vacation, states that only pay unused vacation when contracts exist and states that do not have a law or administrative policy for vacation. The states where unused vacation  must be paid in all cases  are  as  follows: California, Illinois, Montana, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Nebraska, North Dakota (unless the employee quits and has been notified in advance that vacation won’t be paid), and Rhode Island. The states requiring that unused vacation be paid if an  employment contract or employer promise/policy to pay exists  are  as  follows: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Delaware, Georgia, Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. States, where  there is no relevant law or administrative policy requiring payment for vacation include  Florida, Idaho, New Mexico, South Dakota, Virginia, and Wyoming. Pay for Unused Sick Time Unlike unused vacation days, employers are not required to pay employees for accrued sick time. Some employers may pay for unused sick time as an incentive to avoid abuse of their sick day policy, or if they are contractually obligated to pay for sick time. Pay for Paid Time Off (PTO) Days More and more organizations are moving from designated vacation and sick pay to paid time off (PTO) days. With PTO, employees can elect to use the days as they wish - vacation, sick time, personal leave, bereavement, etc. PTO days are treated the same as vacation days in terms of employment law, so they would also be payable to the employee in the states listed above. If you are fired, you may or may not be paid for unused vacation and sick time. It depends on two factors  - company policy and the law in your state regarding accrued leave time and whether that company policy sets the  criteria for: Paying any employees for unused vacation or sick leavePaying employees who are fired for cause for unused vacation or sick leave How Eligibility for Unused Leave Pay  Is Determined State laws and how the company policy is written will determine your eligibility for payment. Employers should document their company policies with clear and consistent language so that employees understand what they are entitled to receive when their job is  terminated. Taking time to explicitly spell out the policies and procedures for employees can prevent resentment and potential legal issues down the line.   The organization cannot have a policy that violates state labor law. However, in states that don’t require employers to pay out unused time off, the company can decide whether to establish policies denying payment for accrued vacation or sick time to terminated employees.   Companies are able to freely decide the type of vacation schedule they use. Some companies issue a bank of paid time off at the beginning of the year, while others may require the employee to earn a certain number of days per month or hours per pay period. To add to that, companies are also legally able to limit the maximum number of vacation days an employee can accrue.   Depending on the state, it may be illegal to impose policies by which an employee is required to use their vacation time within a given timeframe or be forced to forfeit it. For example, in the case of states that compensate for unused vacation time, this “use it or lose it” rule could be seen as taking away compensation the employee had already earned. Check with your Human Resources department or  state department of labor  for information on what unused leave pay you qualify to receive. State laws may change, and individual circumstances may vary. Sources State Departments of LaborThomsonEmployment Law Handbook?Business Management DailyReuters
